Curious about Clifton’s Cafeteria?
Right around the birth of what we now know as the midcentury period, Cliftons Cafeteria on Broadway in downtown LA hit the dining scene. After several years of remodeling, a woodsy den of delights has been uncovered, restored and reproduced. Norman Bates would feel right at home here with their vast array of taxidermy scattered throughout, and he might of hit it off with former regular Ray Bradbury. The ‘new’ still hasn’t worn off this very old hangout, as expected, long lines at both the bar and food tray line would magically ebb and flow like the tide. A really hateful bartender, a shortage of Brussels sprouts and a couple of floors still being remodeled won’t deter my return visit. Desserts taste like they’ve been catered by a hospital making them live up to their slogan ‘Cabinet of Curiosities’.
